Daniel Kim is an Engineering Director at Meta (formerly Facebook), where he joined in early 2007 as approximately the 200th employee. Sixteen years later, he is now the company’s 11th-longest-tenured employee. Most recently, he served as the Lead for NPE (New Product Experimentation) Korea, Meta’s internal incubator and a central pillar of the company’s global expansion strategy.
Prior to this role, Daniel led engineering teams at Oculus. His teams were responsible for building core experiences for the Quest headset lineup, including Horizon Home, Guardian, Anytime UI, and Notifications. Before Oculus, Daniel founded and led Instagram’s Growth Engineering team, which played a pivotal role in scaling Instagram’s user base from 170 million to 1.1 billion within just five years.
Earlier in his career at Meta, Daniel was a founding member of Facebook’s Android team and contributed to the company’s crucial mobile transition in 2010. In 2008, he was also part of Facebook’s original Growth team—the first of its kind in the industry—which defined the playbook that would later shape user growth strategies across leading global tech companies.
Before joining Facebook, Daniel held brief roles at Oracle and Booz Allen Hamilton. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University in just three years, with an additional minor in Robotics. He is also a founding member and charter brother of Carnegie Mellon’s Alpha Kappa Psi chapter.
Born and raised in Maryland, Daniel moved to the San Francisco Bay Area after graduation and lived there for 16 years. In 2021, he relocated to Korea with his family, where he currently resides. He played competitive volleyball for four years in high school and continues to enjoy both playing and watching sports of all kinds. Daniel is also an active startup investor with Sand Hill Angels and launched a podcast in 2023 comparing Korean and American culture.
As a Venture Partner at SparkLabs, Daniel brings deep expertise in engineering leadership, product scaling, mobile transformation, and global user growth—supporting founders as they build products that can scale to millions of users worldwide.
